Email: hello@bitmerger.de

2. The essentials

  • This website sets no cookies and embeds no third-party services: no fonts, scripts, maps or videos from other servers.
  • There are no forms and no user accounts.
  • Visits are counted with a self-hosted, cookieless analytics tool (section 4).
  • The BitMerger software itself runs only on your computer and sends no data to me. This policy only covers the website bitmerger.de.

3. Hosting and server log files

The website runs on a virtual server operated by me in the data centre of STRATO GmbH, Otto-Ostrowski-Straße 7, 10249 Berlin, Germany.

For every request the web server automatically stores:

  • IP address, shortened (for IPv4 the last byte, for IPv6 the last 80 bits are set to 0, so it can no longer be traced back to your connection),
  • date and time,
  • requested address, status code and amount of data transferred,
  • referrer (the previous page, if your browser sends it),
  • browser identification (user agent).

Purpose: delivering the website, detecting and preventing attacks, troubleshooting.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; my legitimate interest is secure and stable operation.
Retention: 14 days, after which the log files are deleted automatically. They are not included in backups or any other analysis.

Only if a request causes an error (e.g. the server does not respond) does the web server also write an entry to its error log, which contains the full IP address. This log is likewise deleted after 14 days.

4. Analytics with Umami

To see which pages are read and how visitors find the site, I use Umami, an open-source analytics tool that I host myself on my server. No data is passed to third parties.

Umami sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses. It records: page visited, referrer, browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and the country derived from the IP address. To count visits, Umami creates a hash from IP address, user agent and a regularly changing random value; the IP address cannot be recovered from it, and no visitor can be recognised over a longer period.

Purpose: anonymous usage statistics to improve content and guides.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR; my legitimate interest is knowing which content is helpful.

5. Storage in your browser (light/dark, language)

If you choose light or dark mode or a language with the switches, your browser stores this choice in local storage (localStorage, keys theme and locale). The values stay in your browser and are not sent to the server. On your first visit to the home page, the site also reads the language set in your browser to take you to the German or French version; this too happens only in your browser. Storing it is strictly necessary for these functions you requested (§ 25(2) no. 2 TDDDG). You can delete it at any time in your browser settings.

6. Downloads and links to GitHub and GitLab

The download files are hosted on GitHub. When you click a download link, you download the file directly from GitHub; GitHub, Inc., 88 Colin P. Kelly Jr. Street, San Francisco, CA 94107, USA, processes your data (e.g. IP address) under its own responsibility. GitHub is certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. Details: GitHub privacy statement.

Version number, date and file sizes on this site are requested from GitHub by my server; no data about you is transmitted.

Links to GitHub issues and to the GitLab mirror (GitLab Inc., USA) lead to their sites; their privacy policies apply once you click them.

7. Contact by email

If you write to hello@bitmerger.de, I process your address and the content of your message to answer it. Emails are stored on my own mail server.
Legal basis: Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (answering your request).
Retention: until your request is settled, unless statutory retention obligations apply.

8. Your rights

You have the right of access (Art. 15 GDPR), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction of processing (Art. 18), data portability (Art. 20) and to object to processing based on Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR (Art. 21). An email to hello@bitmerger.de is enough.

You can also lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority, for example the Bavarian Data Protection Authority (Bayerisches Landesamt für Datenschutzaufsicht), Promenade 18, 91522 Ansbach, Germany, www.lda.bayern.de.

9. No automated decisions

There is no automated decision-making and no profiling.
